About the British Open

The British Open logo

The British Open, also known ominously just as “The Open” or as “The Open Championship” is a major golf tournament in the UK. It is actually the last held of four Grand Slams. The others are the US Open, the Masters Tournament, and the PGA Championship. The tournament is the last of the major ones to be held in the year and it takes place between mid to late July. The British Open is a 72-hole stroke play tournament that is played across 10 courses. The courses are scattered throughout England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

The courses are occupied by 156 players and it goes on for four days. Each day, 18 holes are played unless the weather decides otherwise. These matches are played on link courses. That means that the courses were built on the foundation of land, making the terrain uneven and grassy. These courses also see a lot of wind given the treacherous UK weather. So, athletes face some tough challenges as well.

There is a bit of history behind the concept of this championship. The reason it is called the Open is that the tournament is open to anyone. Whether you’re a professional, semi-professional, or amateur golfer, you will be allowed to participate in the British Open.

If you know golf, you’ll know that tours happen throughout the year for golfers. They visit events in multiple regions. And the British Open is an event that is a part of the roster for the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour. This summer event sees a lot of action from golfers that come from different parts of the world, including the US. And that makes the British Championship a sporting event that even Americans enjoy betting on.

Betting on the British Open

The British Open is a popular tournament to bet on around the world. Many sportsbooks project odds in advance for the winners. The same goes for pre-tournament betting. And those bets are locked in the day before the tournament starts. Over the course of the four days in which the tournament happens, a lot of sportsbooks also accept live bets. Golf is a great sport for live betting since it gives punters ample time to round up their bets after careful consideration.

There are plenty of popular markets for both pre-match and in-play golf betting. If you’re interested to know more about it, we’ve listed a few of the most popular ones here.

These are some of the most popular markets for Open Championship betting:

How to Bet On The Open Championship

In this section, we’ll give you a few tips on how you can get your predictions right for golf betting. The Open Championship betting is a bit more complex than regular golf betting. Considering the nature of the tournament, you need to keep a lot more in mind.

Just like with any other sport, you’ll have to do a lot of research on the players for British Open betting. The players will likely have played in the earlier tournaments prior to taking part in the Open. If you keep track of those tournaments, you’ll be able to get a lot of insight into how they might be playing in the Open. Another very important aspect is to keep the weather and course in mind.

As we mentioned earlier, the Open is hosted in different courses in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. And the rounds are played on link courses built on uneven land. Each of the courses is likely to have different characteristics to them. And so, golfers will have to use different strategies in order to get the correct shot. The courses might also be very windy due to the location. And these are things that golfers have to keep in mind for playing and that punters have to keep in mind to place the right bets.

The Open Championship Betting Offers

The British Open betting Coral

The British Open is the time of the year when all golf fans wait eagerly to watch the four rounds live on Sky Sports. Around the same time, golf fans who also happen to be sports bettors wait for the offers that sportsbooks might come up with.

During the Open Championship season, a lot of sportsbooks might come up with short-term offers to get punters more excited to bet. One thing we’re sure to see a lot of is free bets. Since the event happens over the course of four days, free bets can come in handy for punters who are placing multiple bets.

Enhanced odds for win only markets are one we’ve listed as popular for the open championship betting. So, we can also expect to see a lot of enhanced odds on different players as an offer.  New customers are likely to see a lot of risk-free bet offers at many different sportsbooks. These are similar to bet insurances where punters can place bets and still earn something back if the bet loses.

There will be plenty of other interesting offers for the Open Championship betting. You can check out some of the offers by visiting online sportsbooks that are operating in your region.

2023 British Open Predictions and Tips

The next Open Championship is set to be held in 2023 starting on the 20th of July and ending on the 23rd of July. This will be the 151st edition of the tournament and the course is set to be the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England. Based on a comparison of odds, it’s safe to say that Rory Mcllroy has been the favourite so far to take home the purse. He has been landing stunners on the course for the past few years of his career and he also had great odds for the previous British Open.

Matt Fitzpatrick is a very underrated player who has been slowly improving over the past few years. His game in the next season is expected to be sharp and he’s very creative with his shots. Jordan Spieth had a slow start to his season. But he has a great record in the British Open and many of the other major tournaments as well. He is definitely a contender despite his age and he might be the dark horse in the tournament. These are just a few of the predictions that we could come up with based on the current odds. The British Open is still months away and it is very early to be deciding any winners at the moment.

Our tips for betting on the Open Championship in the next edition would be to follow all of the other major tournaments that are happening before that. The dominant players will be participating in other tournaments and keeping track will help you figure out their performance in the future. But you shouldn’t lock in your bets until right before the start of the tournament. The reason for that is you won’t be able to predict the weather conditions so far in advance.

2022 British Open Highlights

The 2022 edition of the British Open was the 150th edition of the tournament. The winner for this edition is the Australian golfer Cameron Smith. He has won 5 other tournaments on the PGA tour. Cameron turned the tournament around with a run of five consecutive birdies through holes 10 and 14. Rory Mcllroy was actually in the lead until Smith got a 30 on the Black 9. This was said to be the lowest over closing 9 holes in the history of the British Open.

Mcllroy won his last Open back in 2014 and was expected to lift the trophy again. That is until he had a 54-hole lead and hit every green in regulation and was overtaken by the Australian in the final round. Bairstow also started off his final round with a bang having hit three birdies to reach the four over. Sam Burns, who played his second Open in 2022 also hit his third birdie early in the morning to reach one under. Just before noon, Matsuyama went five under in the final round and put himself two under overall. Garrick Higo from South Africa, at the ripe age of 23, qualified for his first open and hit a hattrick. He also landed an eagle to move to four under.

The most shocking moment of the 2022 British Open was Mcllroy being overtaken by the Australian Cameron Smith. Rory Mcllroy also missed a major back in 2015 due to an injury. But the last few years have been some of the best of his career. Although Mcllroy lost the last edition of the Open, he has the best odds again for this edition and his fans have a lot to hope for.

Although the next season is still quite a bit away, sportsbooks are taking pre-tournament bets and punters are quite content with those for now. The pre-tournament bets are expected to close just before the 20th of July 2023, when the tournament is set to begin.
